Casa Cactus
COMPORTA / HOME / WATCHLIST
Tucked away behind the rustic rice paddies of Comporta, Casa Cactus oozes beach-shack chic. The private, three-bedroom house sleeps six people and embraces a refined decoration in harmony with nature, perfectly combining authenticity with discreet luxury. Working with Lisbon-based interior design house Barracuda, the owners have carefully renovated the fisherman’s cottage in classic Comporta style, filling it with curiosities and furniture collected on their travels.
The starting points for this eclectic house were some extraordinary objects related to the sea & the navy which were inherited by the owner & are central to the décor. A harmonious composition of later-20th-century furniture and Portuguese decorative objects act as a bridge between the architecture & the art.
Spend your days lounging barefoot on the driftwood decking, dipping in & out of the swimming pool with panoramic views of the rice paddies beyond. For sand seekers, take long lunches on the beach at nearby Sublime Comporta Beach Club before a spot of rustic retail therapy in Carvalhal, essential before sundowners overlooking orange sunsets on the rice fields with a gin & tonic. The village of Comporta is a mere 30 minute cycle or 10 minute car ride away.

The Neighbourhood: The house is located in the peaceful region of Comporta characterised by rural towns, wild Atlantic beaches & a raw rugged landscape: vineyards, rice fields & pine forests tumble down hillsides, while the ocean is a constant uninterrupted smudge on the horizon.
Things to know: Be aware too that Comporta is quite seasonal, so outside of the summer months, some restaurants close. That being said, October & Spring are our favourite times to visit without the crowds. As the house is next to the rice paddies, unlike the rest of the year, July – August is a critical time for mosquitoes in Comporta.
