Casa Dois
OLHÃO / HOME / WATCHLIST
The second instalment of The Addresses residences is located amongst the cobbled side streets of salty and soulful Olhão, just moments from the fisherman's boats that trundle to the East Algarve's desert islands. Inspired by Portuguese local traditions, architecture and way of life, two Belgian brothers have converted a former fish canning warehouse into a modern three-story townhouse with a sultry Southern city feel.
A modernist take on the vernacular architecture of the Algarve by Atelier Rua, the house is home to a high-ceilinged open-plan living, dining and space where light spills in from a row of beautifully preserved archways that give access a small courtyard surrounded by whitewashed walls, including a refreshing plunge pool. Upstairs, two double bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms sit along a cool corridor, leading eventually to a staircase up to a dramatic patio with views over the Ria Formosa. When it’s too cool to be outside, retreat indoors and cosy in as the house is equipped with underfloor heating and a log burner for the cooler winter months.

The Neighbourhood: On your doorstep lie the local Marisqueiras (fish restaurants) supplied by Olhão’s infamous market that flanks the water’s edge just moments away. Walk to the daily market which spills out onto the waterfront every Wednesday and Saturday to collect fresh ingredients for rustling up in your kitchen at home. If eating out is too tempting, we love Chá Chá Chá, a whimsical little tasca hidden in the old town.
Things to know: Olhão is a little rough around the edges as a fishing town that is home to one of the poorest communities in the Algarve. That being said, the old town is rising from disrepair & neglect in recent years & has undergone a cultural renaissance of sorts, attracting a creative & artsy crowd (like the boys who own Casa Dois) who have set about restoring the architectural mix of Moorish influences & the grandeur of its former glory.
