Rattling off the old agricultural road that leads out of Comporta, turning off along a beachy track that leads to the wild Atlantic, glimpses of Casa dos Brejos begin to appear out of the sand. In an iconic ode to the region’s architecture, this collection of cabanas are spread out to blend with the landscape & rise up out of the ‘brejos’ (which translates from the Portuguese to, ‘swamplands’) of this restful enclave.
Padding past swaths of indigenous grasses & fruit trees, a barely-there glass door leads into the heart of the home where warm design & earthy tones pay homage to eclectic luxury. Fun & laid-back interiors are curated by Lisbon-based designer Felipa Almeida - alongside her mother, the owner of the house. The family affair continues with artwork by Felipa’s sister, Carolina Almeida, that playfully adorns the walls. The three women inject a unique curiosity into each of the rooms which are complimented by one-of-a-kind furniture & ceramics (we particularly love the unique clay pots by Sedimento). Each piece is individually sourced & commissioned from auctions, Portuguese collectors, makers & artists .
When it comes to spending time in this heavenly home, start the day in one of six cool yet cosy bedrooms, waking to the vision of swaths of wildflowers & grasses for an instant feeling of immersion in nature. Perfect for families or groups of friends, spend time lazing in the outdoor living room on seriously lounge-worthy banquettes shaded by bamboo pergolas, padding down to the pool to cool off. As the water laps, drink in views of the small farms & rice fields that have been in Comporta since the beginning of time.

Location: Casa dos Brejos is located just outside of Comporta in the Alentejo region of Portugal. The beach is 5 - 10 minute drive away.
Price: On request.
Sleeps: Twelve people in six double, ensuite bedrooms. There are four in the main house & a separate cabana for teenagers or those seeking maximum privacy.
Highlights: The intricate interior details & artwork at Casa dos Brejos mean you’ll instantly feel inspired by the ingenuity of a place where old meets new.
Our favourite room: You’ll have the whole house to yourself, but dreams are made in the master suite which looks out onto its own private terrace overlooking the rice fields.
Services: The house is self-catered (which is a luxury as the kitchen is one of the highlights of the house). There is also an option to add on an in-house chef. Daily housekeeping is included.

The Neighbourhood: A short drive away is the town of Comporta a sleepy sea-side Alentejo town that comes alive in the summer season.
Things to know: There is some construction going on in the area but during the summer months this is paused by a regional halt. Works are set to be completed by early 2023.
