Casa Jacaranda

COMPORTA / HOME / WATCHLIST

Be lured to Comporta’s pristine 70km stretch of white beach with a stay at this contemporarily converted fisherman house, located at the heart of rural Comporta in the gated community of Casas da Encosta. A three en-suite bedroom house sleeps a total of 6 people, while the fourth, large bunk bed suite has a mezzanine sleeps an additional 6, perfect for groups of families or friends.

Laze around two large living areas, including a great room with an open plan kitchen and dining space with 6-metre vaulted ceilings and large bohemian wicker pendants. A fireplace is cosy in the cooler months while large windows with views over the glistening 14m swimming pool and surrounding native pine forest give a new definition to indoor-outdoor living. Elsewhere a separate screening room with a large, cosy sofa and quaint reading nook overlooking an ancient olive tree in the centre courtyard is the perfect place to curl up after a day at the beach.

When pool chills and petanque matches on Jacaranda’s private court get too much, stroll or cycle just 1km through pretty scenes of dunes and farms to the beach, or make haste through a smattering of bold modern holiday homes that punctuate the wild landscape to the villages of Carvalhal & Comporta. Each has long been a refuge for creatives wishing to put their urban lives on hold & find inspiration amongst raw scenery & down-to-earth charm.

The Neighbourhood: The warm stretch of sand that elongates 70kms down the Atlantic coast is within walking distance from the house which sits on a nature reserve. In the white-washed village of Comporta itself, the bank, church, bakery, offices, factories & workers’ houses all retain their rustic, laid-back character & sit happily beside eco-chic boutiques & restaurants.

Things to know: Mosquitos in Comporta can be pesky, but in this part of the area, set back from the rice paddies they are a little more under control. Just make sure you pack a (natural) spray & be prepared to light candles in the evening.
