Reveered Portuguese architect Eduardo Souto de Moura has recasts a historic Porto townhouse as a modern urban pad in the local & leafy neighbourhood of Foz do Douro on the edge of the historical city of Porto.

Wander down cobbled, winding streets - which lead either South to the Atlantic ocean, or North to the contemporary art mecca of the Serralves Foundation - & eventually you'll find this small house tucked away behind an ivy wall. Designed by the 2011 Pritzker Architecture Prize laureate & one of the country's foremost creatives, the house was once chosen as an example of architectural best practice in historic places by the Centre for Architecture, Creativity & Sustainability & it's easy to see why. The appeal of this contemporary conversion is in its simple design; minimalist colours in cream & white provide respite from the buzz of the city outside, while limited decor & unfussy modern art allude to intrigue & character.

Two of the three bedrooms are located on the first floor & have their own bathrooms, while the garden loft is on the ground floor, with a small living room, bathroom & private garden. There is also a communal area & a fully-equipped kitchen.
