Gerês House
VIEIRA DO MIÑHO / HOME / WATCHLIST
Anchored into a rugged hillside, the uniquely formed ‘Gerês House’ has been designed by architecture studio Carvalho Araújo (the same creatives behind the Concrete House). A wooden & concrete structure with panoramic views of the surrounding Portuguese landscape, the sleek residence is set against a slope in the Caniçada Valley in Northern Portugal. The home breaks the standard boundaries between landscape & architecture, presenting a pure, elemental form entirely integrated into its wild, wooded setting.
A winding stream trickles from the top of the property, pooling its way into a natural swimming pool below the house that is surrounded by soft wooden decking. Inside, the geometric living spaces are clad in board-marked concrete & exposed timber walls, giving the property the atmosphere of a decadent forest lodge. The structure is elevated imaginatively on structural feet, or posts, giving it a light, floating character while wooden furniture & grey textiles inside add texture as the expansive living room extends to a terrace with sweeping views. This is a place that manages to stand out & inspire awe, yet also entirely blend into its rich, natural surroundings.
Head here to get lost in a pile of books or head out into the wilderness to get lost amongst dramatic hiking trails, wild swimming to cool off during the summer & returning to an open fireplace in winter.
